The Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) has said the country will feature 90 wrestlers at the 2018 African Wrestling Championships in Port Harcourt from February 7 to 11.

President of the NWF Daniel Igali said on Wednesday that the team comprises 30 wrestlers each in the cadet, junior and senior categories.

The Sydney 2000 Olympic Games gold medallist (for Canada) said the federation was determined to take advantage of being hosts of the competition to develop some of the wrestlers.

“ Being hosts of the competition is an advantage for the hosts to expose more of their athletes – that ’s how it is done in developed countries – and we want to do that too , ” he said.

“ We will have 90 wrestlers – 30 in each category – to ensure that we have some good chances at winning medals as well as giving the wrestlers a chance to develop their skills."

“ We may not be able to have such a large number of wrestlers due to funding constraints if the competition was outside the country . ”

Meanwhile , the federation has appointed Ifeoma IHEANACHO, who was the 2009 and 2010 World Championships bronze medallist,
as a coach of the women ’ s junior team.
