International Day Against Drug Abuse And Illicit Trafficking: Scholarships And Opportunities Educate, Sensitize AAUA Students On Illegal Consumption Of Drugs


A day sensitization forum on Drug Abuse tagged CODEINE, TRAMADOL, SHISHA, POP CULTURE: Why Not, So What has been held in Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State on the 27th of June, 2018 at the Nelson Mandela Hall of the institution.

The forum which was organised by Scholarships and Opportunities had in attendance the Convener of the forum who is also a lecturer at the department of Political Science in the institution, Miss Funmi Olorunfemi; Mr. Inah Michael, Dr. Olugbenga Daso, Mr. Kunle Akinola, Mr. Louis Adekola of the institution Advancement office, and as well representative of NAFDAC and NDLEA. 



In her welcome address, the convener described Drug Abuse as a menace in the society which has eaten deep into the system of most students and youths. She described such act as a bad one which is of no benefit to the drug abusers.



In his keynote address, a medical doctor at the University Health Centre, Dr. Olugbenga Daso described drug abuse to be an illegal use of drugs by an individual for a particular reason which is dangerous to live of such person. 

He listed reasons for so much drug abuse to include Unemployment, lack of family values, failures of religious leaders, social media/peer group, celebrity lifestyle, amongst others.

On the medical implications drug abuse has on those indulging in it, the medical practitioner highlighted them to include: HIV, Chronic kidney disease, Chronic liver disease, Vomiting, Headache , Amnesia, Loss of consciousness, Lung cancer, death.

While the Psychosocial effects of taking abused drug are: Ineffectiveness of work, Job loss, Hooliganism, Broken relationship, depression, Mania, Law breaking, Broken family, Homelessness, Suicide.

He listed remedies of escaping drug abuse to include: Find a new hobby, Find a mentor, Find a new goal for yourself, Change your environment (if possible), Change your friends and accomplices, Join a good religion, Be an active member of an Organization against drug abuse

Also, Mr. Inah Michael said drug abuse is taken for social rather than medical reasons. A drug is said to be abuse when it's use has been officially and formally prohibited by a State of Country.

He made it clear that indulging in practice of drug abuse is a gateway to self destruction which must be avoided, as the reasons why people take up drug abuse as their hobby to be: Peer pressure, performance enhancement, broken homes, Social pathology, Low esteem, Occupational predisposition, and other factors.

Earlier a walk round Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko was staged on the 26th of June to sensitize youths and students on the effect of taking illegal drugs.

Other part of the forum include: Panel discussion, Playlet, Comedy, Networking.
